Why (and How) Does Dhyana Recommend Meditations?

The pandemic struck us hard, and it stayed. An exasperating time for extroverts – who essentially gain their energy from people, and the outdoors. Someone who loves hanging out with people — engages in discussion after discussion tirelessly, found themself locked up at home, unalarmed. Incidentally, a mentally exhausting time for introverts too – who love their quiet, but tend to question their productivity and indulge in the classic act of overthinking; because of the lockdown, more often than usual. However, if there’s one thing that has come to the rescue of almost every breathing individual, it’s Dhyana aka meditation.

But, even with meditation, there’s always a fear of whether you are doing it right, whether it is working or whether it is even effective? You’d never know unless there was some way to measure and quantify it.

We did some research and gathered that stress and relaxation can be found in tiny variations that occur in consecutive heartbeats. Heart Rate Variability, when measured, shows how stressed our body is or how relaxed it is. Thanks to this feature, the dhyana app measures your HRV to tell you the actual amount of time you’ve truly meditated for in a session — we call this your mindful minutes.

Measuring how well someone meditates sounds cool, but what if you don’t even know how to meditate? Or you enjoy meditating on the content of another app and don’t want to be buttonholed into a single ecosystem, well, Dhyana’s thought of that too: we allowed Dhyana to work with any and all apps from across the internet. In short, the amount of content you can access from Dhyana is unlimited.

While that term sounds exciting, it also brings in a lot of stress. The choice is good, but too much choice is trouble. We’ve all faced it, while trying to order lunch, we’re faced with the daunting task of picking one dish from a hundred restaurants serving different cuisines. The task seems almost impossible, finding that needle in a haystack, however in this case the needle is also hay coloured.

Stress is the opposite of what we want the user to experience in our application, so we began to create Artificial Intelligence that helps you pick the kind of meditations you’d like to listen to and absorb. The idea was simple, understand the user’s listening patterns, pick the meditations that suit it. Simple right? Well, it would have been if the whole internet was catalogued and tagged.

This is when the idea dawned upon us that selecting meditations should be as seamless as selecting new music to listen to like on apps like Spotify. Spotify was one of the biggest inspirations behind our AI model, whereby a team of data scientists would catalogue and tag every meditation ever listened to on our app.

No, we don’t track which meditation YOU listen to, but that this file was accessed by A user. This creates anonymity between the scientist and the user, thereby allowing the scientist to judge the meditation without bias. The tags vary from ‘Spiritual’, ‘Christian’, ‘Buddhist’ to ‘Relaxing music’, ‘Pop song’, ‘Lo-fi Beats’.

However, before we recommend any meditations, the app needs to understand your motivation and skill. Let’s take any journey which is arduous, the time will eventually come when we ask the question ‘what is all this for?’, at which point figuring out the purpose of the journey is important to remember. It’s the original motivating thought that that made us move out of our comfort zone and into this wild new path, and recalling this thought keeps us in check and on track.

This motivating thought is the first question you answer once you download the Dhyana app since it not only reaffirms your commitment to meditation, but it helps us understand that the content you need should keep reinforcing it as well. Whether it’s to ‘eat more mindfully’ or to ‘sleep better’, the content we listen to not only shape the way we meditate but also allows us to introspect which is a key aspect of all meditation practises around the world.

So our data scientists also begin to catalogue meditations from across the internet into these compartments of motivation. Every day one recommended meditation is based on what you selected as a motivation for why you’re meditating. You may not access it regularly, but the days that you do, it subtly reminds you to stay on course and not waiver.
