Why should we be mindful for 21 minutes a day

The Structure of the Telomere, Cell, Chromosome and DNA

First let’s begin with our biology. Our body is made of cells, and each cell has a nucleus and inside the nucleus are chromosomes, which are containers of our DNA.

Telomeres are small tiny objects at the end of the chromosome. These telomeres acts like objects that hold the chromosome together.

For a long time, the scientific community didn’t understand the purpose of these telomeres. This changed however, when Prof. Elizabeth Blackburn discovered that telomeres were the biological clock of our body. She discovered that the shorter the telomere the more likely you were to get early disease or untimely death.

Her study of 65,000 people over a 15 year period found that after removing all other factors that could increase or decrease life expectancy/life span, longer telomeres were independantly associated with greater longevity. The longer your telomeres, the longer you will live!

Elizabeth+H+Blackburn+Nobel+Prize+Award+CeremonyStrangely enough she discovered something else that was startling. The more stress we’re under, the faster our telomeres begin to shrink and deplete. Furthermore, studies later have pointed that being mindful for just a few minutes a day makes us more resilient to telomere decay.

The purpose of dhyana is to ensure that you’re truly mindful for that period of time. Few people are able to sit and completely fall into a state of mindfulness at will; most of us don’t have that ability. We’re plagued by thoughts, our emotions, our fears and so on. But remaining to be mindful for those few minutes a day, can make all the difference, from reduced hairfall to younger looking skin.

So where did the 21 number come from?

It came from research. When we began to understand how people meditated, we also understood their meditation patterns. We noticed that those who were most skilled at meditation, only required an average of 21 minutes of mindfulness.

This was also substantiated by research that showed how meditating for 10 mins, twice a day has such a large impact on people’s telomere resistance.
