How Does Dhyana Measure Your Mindfulness?

When we say that one of Dhyana’s promises is to measure your mindfulness, you’re probably thinking:

How can a simple ring understand the mind? How can it understand how mindful you are? Doesn’t it monitor heart rate how is that connected to mindfulness? What is mindfulness?

Let’s begin by defining Mindfulness: Mindfulness is the act of being focussed/aware without getting distracted. Imagine you’re reading a book. A good thriller, perhaps. At some point, you’re lost within the world of the book, to such an extent you no longer see the turn of the page or the written word, you’re inside the book, living in it.

At that moment of time, when your attention is so focussed that our mind has the ability to think, imagine and be logical at the same time, is when we’re mindful.

What we understood early on, is that the common perception that meditation is about relaxing was wrong. At the very heart of every meditation practise around the world was mindfulness. 

Tibetan Meditation talks about mindful focus, while Yoga talks about Mindful Breathing. Zen is about mindful relaxation. These might seem at odds with one another, but what it means is that in any act that we choose to do, we need to intensely dedicate our mind’s resources into that activity.

Hence when we designed Dhyana‘s guided sessions, we made it a combination of mindful breathing, mindful relaxation and mindful focus. And we designed the ring to be able to distinguish between each of these states.

Let’s be clear, dhyana only monitors one thing: Heart Rate Variability. What HRV carries is the information about breathing and our subconscious (scientifically called the Autonomous Nervous System (ANS)). When we’re mindfully breathing our body’s heart beat begins to mimic our breathing pattern only. Our ANS doesn’t even play a role in it  anymore.

When we are mindfully relaxing, our heart rate variability moves at a higher frequency than earlier, which makes our heart rate look almost constant, but within it small variations keep occurring.

When we are mindfully focussed, our body goes through the same reaction as when we’re in a sympathetic state of our nervous system, meaning that we see more low frequency variations in the heart rate variability.

I know it may astound you to learn that heart rate carries so much information about our state of mind, but this is something that the scientific community was well aware of for many years.

The obvious question is then, why can’t other heart rate devices do the same? The answer is because they can’t calculate heart rate variability. Read more about it here.
